Date: 17.6.13
Time: 20:20
Location: Sir William Dunn School of Pathology, Oxford
The morning began today with a lab meeting where two of the graduate students working in conjunction with the lab practised giving presentations that they will be giving later this week. Professor Gull pointed out that it is important while giving a presentation to use correct terminology, include results of studies performed during work, and include a conclusion portion.
Following the lab meeting was a budget meeting where it became clear that labs are funded by a series of grants and allocating properly and budgeting this money responsibly is incredibly important, as no new money is being made. Also, once salaries for scientists in the lab are removed, and equipment fees are covered, there is not much extra money left over.
Once at the Dunn School, there was a brief safety intro and tour (super exciting I know). The parasites being used in the Gull lab have the potential to infect cattle as well as humans and therefore there are a series of licenses and regulations that the lab must abide by. Besides infective parasites, the lab also uses known carcinogens which require gloves and lab coats at all times. Closed toe shoes are also required (darn, no Jack Rogers).
After lunch I used pipettes to create a series of balances from 500µL to 1500µL for the centrifuge. Science!!
