 Today, with the day off, I of course decided to do cultural things.  First was the Pitt Rivers Museum

which was an incredibly interesting display of one man's collection of anything and everything.  From seal intestine rain jackets to shrunken heads to credit-card-sized Italian handguns, this guy had everything.  From here we went to lunch at Byron, which claims to make "proper hamburgers".  Classic England.  This was followed by a trip to the Ashmolean,

 a museum where we looked at exhibits for famous sketches from the likes of Michelangelo, etc. as well as the Stradivarius violins.  We also looked at 18th century artwork, noting the discovery of perspective in order to create three dimensional art as well as famous dutch portraits and the political significance of most paintings.  

 Here is what I have learned from England thus far: It rains a lot so always be prepared to get wet, i.e. don't wear nice leather shoes anywhere.  

 A few hours in a bookstore later and it is time to call it a day.  There is research to be done tomorrow!!

Date: 24.6.13 Time: 17:38 Location: St. Edmund Hall, Oxford, England This morning began with a lab meeting and a presentation by Helen.  She is currently writing and hoping to publish a paper on her work with trypanosomes thus far.  She has been working with the role certain proteins play in cell division, specifically BA25 and BA35, which are two of the proteins our very own Bungo discovered.  She found that when procyclic form of the cells lack BA25 or BA35, there is no change in their splitting.  However, when the bloodstream form lacks these proteins, they turn into 2K1N cells (cells that are not able to duplicate), and eventually die.  Therefore, finding a way to remove the BA25 and BA35 proteins from the bloodstream form would provide a cure for the disease they cause.  Also, when publishing her paper, Helen would like to provide official names for the BA25 and BA35 proteins (since they were discovered in this lab they do not yet have official nam...

Looking for a way to connect with other rad women in tech? Check out the Rewriting the Code Fellow program. It's a great way to meet other like-minded individuals and get access to great job opportunities. As a Fellow, you have the opportunity to attend webinars (like the one on Cybersecurity last week and the one on internship prep yesterday), tech talks, special interest groups, meetups, and more. I joined Rewriting the Code as a Fellow about a year and a half ago. As a Fellow, I have gained not only a community of women across the country but also within my school. I have other Fellows in my engineering classes, and it is great to know you have these women to go to for homework help, study sessions, and general support. In addition to meeting people, I have also learned a lot. The webinars and tech talks are chalk full of relevant tech topics. DA Bots make the DA Bulletin

After two tough competitions, the Deerfield robotics team was awarded third place for the Inspire Award, the highest award given at FTC competitions.  With this award, the team will be advancing onto the State competition at Greens Farms Academy on March 8th.  While most people on campus don't know much about DA Bots, we were given a shout-out on the Daily Bulliten, the Deerfield website with all the important happenings of the school, and were suddenly the talk of campus!
