I'm Back!

Another school year has passed, and that means another summer is here, ready to be filled with research, robotics, and writing.  This summer will be more mellow than last (i.e. no trips to Oxford to study deadly pathogens), but while the work this summer might be different, it does not make it any less important.

Next year I'm going to be returning to Greenwich Academy, where I will be joining the FTC team RoboEpic.  I will also be taking a course on engineering and design, an independent research seminar, and will be joining the STEM interest group.  GA has a lot of great opportunities for a Science geek like me and I can't wait to take advantage of them, but until then I'll have to find other ways to make groundbreaking discoveries.

I hope you are just as excited as I am about the next three months, and get ready, it's going to be an adventure.

Date: 12.1.13 Time: 15:30 Location: Deerfield Academy Usually during the winter term I ski for the Deerfield Ski Team, however this is a very large time commitment, something I do not have space for in my Junior Year schedule.  I decided to take the term to pursue other interests that would allow me more free time to focus on my schoolwork during such an important year.  As the founder of the Deerfield Robotics Team, I decided to take the winter term off to focus on robotics and help prepare the team for competition.  The FIRST FTC robotics competition is a serious time commitment, requiring many different components for a team to be ready for competition.  While Deerfield is a boarding school, and the presence of the team together at all times should effectively eliminate meeting time as a concern, department policy means that the team can only meet when a faculty member is present to supervise.  The teacher assigned to supervise the team, however, can only meet twice a week for

Rewriting the Code Fellowship 2019

Looking for a way to connect with other rad women in tech? Check out the Rewriting the Code Fellow program. It's a great way to meet other like-minded individuals and get access to great job opportunities. As a Fellow, you have the opportunity to attend webinars (like the one on Cybersecurity last week and the one on internship prep yesterday), tech talks, special interest groups, meetups, and more. I joined Rewriting the Code as a Fellow about a year and a half ago. As a Fellow, I have gained not only a community of women across the country but also within my school. I have other Fellows in my engineering classes, and it is great to know you have these women to go to for homework help, study sessions, and general support. In addition to meeting people, I have also learned a lot. The webinars and tech talks are chalk full of relevant tech topics. Date: 24.6.13 Time: 17:38 Location: St. Edmund Hall, Oxford, England This morning began with a lab meeting and a presentation by Helen.  She is currently writing and hoping to publish a paper on her work with trypanosomes thus far.  She has been working with the role certain proteins play in cell division, specifically BA25 and BA35, which are two of the proteins our very own Bungo discovered.  She found that when procyclic form of the cells lack BA25 or BA35, there is no change in their splitting.  However, when the bloodstream form lacks these proteins, they turn into 2K1N cells (cells that are not able to duplicate), and eventually die.  Therefore, finding a way to remove the BA25 and BA35 proteins from the bloodstream form would provide a cure for the disease they cause.  Also, when publishing her paper, Helen would like to provide official names for the BA25 and BA35 proteins (since they were discovered in this lab they do not yet have official names besides Bungo's initia
