Get Involved: Smart Woman Securities

Smart Woman Securities Logo
Smart Woman Securities is an organization focused on promoting financial literacy among women. There are chapters at colleges across the country, and I am a member of the UPenn group. As a new member, you are required to attend a series of lectures on different aspects of personal finance as well as corporate finance and the markets. They are taught by senior members of the group and guests. These lectures are very informative and are simplified enough to reach beginners but also in depth enough to engage more experienced students. At the conclusion of the lecture series, students are broken into groups and prepare a pitch for senior members of the club. Successfully completing the lecture series and pitch formally completes the initiation process and students officially become members of SWS. As members, they become eligible to attend the annual SWS national conference, and other events.

SWS Membership Progression
After finishing the lecture series, members select a project group to join. I am in the TMT

(technology, media, telecommunications) group. These groups meet during SWS club meeting time to prepare stock pitches to present to the Investment Board, which manages the club's portfolio. Good pitches can be chosen for real investment!

After spending some time as a member of SWS, there are many opportunities for leadership positions or other more involved roles in the club. As mentioned earlier, the lectures for new members are prepared by women in the club. The Investment Board is also made up of club members. There is also an executive board and more junior positions available.

In addition to education, SWS also provides a community and support system for women looking to pursue finance in any capacity. SWS organizes networking events and presentations for members to connect with companies. It also supports a big/little program where newly initiated members are matched with upperclassmen.

I am fortunate to have found Smart Woman Securities so early in my college career, and have encouraged my friends, especially those in the engineering school that are interested in business, to join. I have learned so much both through the seminars and preparing real pitches. I have also met incredibly smart, driven women within UPenn. I'm looking forward to another year with SWS!
